A Painterly Approach to Quilting
Presenter: Trina Mansfield

Trina Mansfield will teach her method of quilting that is a fresh approach to the traditional quilt. Using the sewing technique called appliqué, working on a sewing machine, she will show her secrets for creating a representational fiber art piece. Painting with fabric instead of paint, she will teach how to plan and execute a one-of-a-kind pictorial tapestry.
Trina Mansfield is a fiber artist from Philadelphia. She has been sewing since the age of 8 years. Graduating from the Art Institute of Philadelphia as a painter, through a series of trial and error attempts, she combined her two passions into her unique form of quilting in which she depicts landscapes and architectural themes in fabric. Trina teaches quilting at Temple University and at the University City Arts League. She has had many one-woman shows and her work is included in many permanent, public and private collections.

Decorative Furniture Painting
with Vinegar Paint

Bill Russell will demonstrate the materials and some basic techniques he uses to create his unique vinegar painted furniture. See how a folk art technique combines with a contemporary sensibility to make a personal statement.
Bill Russell, owner of the Bill Russell Studio in Philadelphia, has a background in the fine arts (MFA, Painting, Miami University) and inherent interest in the form and function of furniture. He has written two books on decorative furniture finishing and his work has been featured on national TV and in numerous print publications. Most recently his painted gentleman's chest was reproduced in the NY Times in November of 2005 in an article on painted furniture.

How a Stained Glass Window

Jay and Mary Ann Paulikonis have been practicing the art of stained glass for thirty years. Jay, the primary fabricator, will demonstrate the traditional techniques of pattern preparation, glass cutting, leading and soldering. He will also show a variety of glasses and discuss how they can be used in different situations.
Jay Paulukonis. For over thirty years Jay and Mary Ann Paulukonis have been practicing the art of stained glass. From their studio they have executed commissions for residential, business and worship environments in many states. Their independent art pieces are found in collections throughout the country and they are currently represented in galleries in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. This is their sixth consecutive appearance at the PFFS, and they will be included In the 21st Guild Sourcebook of Architectural and Interior Art.

Modern Veneered Tables

Leland Leonard will show samples of materials, parts and methods he and his father, Reid Leonard, have devised for graphic parquetry tables.
Leland Leonard. After working in cabinet shops in Pensacola, Florida, as a finishing carpenter at Hatteras Yachts in High Point, North Carolina, and in furniture factories in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Leland Leonard returned home to Pensacola and started a custom furniture business over twenty years ago

Mokume Gane in Polymer Clay
Presenter: Margaret E. Polcawich
Margaret Polcawich will demonstrate how she has borrowed the metalsmithing technique of mokume gane, for use with polymer clay.
Margaret E. Polcawich of Hand Sculpted Furniture, received her BA from Carnegie Mellon University. It is the interplay of functionality and visual ideas that makes her furniture pieces unique. She describes her work as, "A series of abstractions of nature evolving from the silhouettes of trees and leaves, the wrinkles, twists, and turns of a branch, the depth and pattern of a stone, or the movement of a stream."

Leonid and Svetlana Zakurdayev provide an in-depth look at the process of woodcarving. Finding sources
of inspiration, developing original ideas, choosing appropriate woods and tools, the step-by-step carving process and finishing will all be covered.
Leonid & Svetlana Zakurdayev were born in Russia. Leonid holds a degree as a Master Woodcarver and Restorer of Antique Furniture from Stroganov College of Artistic Design in Moscow. While a student, he restored many national treasures and carved elegant interiors for churches, museums and state buildings. His wife, Svetlana, holds an M.A. in Cultural Studies and a Certificate in Interior Design, Moscow. Working together since 1986, they restored and reproduced architectural elements - antique furniture, fireplace mantles, and church altars in Russia. They received numerous national and international awards for their original designs and hand-carved interior items for public and private clients. They came to the US in 1999 and currently live and work in Philadelphia.
